  1. MacCrac Source NOTES:

  3. 4/1/96:  a year and a month later...

  5. This is the source for MacCrac which is infinately superior to its predecessor, Killer Crack Mac, and its successor, MacCrack, both of which-- though easier to find on the net, are suckier.
  6.  
  7. The included source is from a Code Warrior 5 project, so it'll probably get updated when you try to open it with a newer version of CW.

  9. Note:  Here's why MacCrac beats MacCrack and Killer Crack Mac hands down:
  10.  
  11.      #1.  Only MacCrac checks GECOS info  (user's first & last name, etc)
  12.  
  13.      #2.  Only MacCrac uses customizable search templates both for
  14.                                           dictionary words as well as the GECOS pass.   Ie, MacCrac is
  15.                                           not a simple dictionary cracker-- it interprets and modifies
  16.                                        dictionary words to create new possibilities.  And you can 
  17.                                           customize it all.. just like the original Crack 4.1
  18.  
  19.      #3.  Only MacCrac is based completely on Alec Muffett's original
  20.                                        (and classic) Crack 4.1 for UNIX.

  22.                     #4.  MacCrac isn't "shareware" like MacCrack-- it's freeware, dammit.
  23.                                     As if anyone who uses it is going to pay a shareware fee....

  25.                     #5.  MacCrac is FAT -- Killer Crack Mac is 68k only.

  27.                     #6.  *I* ported MacCrac.  that's reason enough.

  29. My next version of MacCrac will be called:  "MacCraq" which will hopefully add to the confusion.

  31. Future versions of MacCrac--  Err, MacCraq-- will include:

  33. -   Run-in-background option  (not included in .01A because background means slower, and I wanted to get it as fast as possible, but what the hell...)
  34. -   Re-compiled on CW8 or CW9 (previous version was w/5) for better optimization and compatibility on PCI macs and stuff.
  35. -   Fix the scrolling so that it actually scrolls and doesn't loop around back to the top...
  36. -   Save preferences.
  37. -   Other cosmetic changes (New splash screen, etc.)
  38. -   Port to Windows, Bebox, Norton, whatever else.. (at which point it will be called WinCraq or something)

  40. Due to popular demand-- the source for v.01A is now included with this version, so that you all can see how bad a programmer I am.  But ya gotta realize, it's cold here in the frozen wasteland.  I've no time for debugging or adding features with frostbite to contend with.  Anyway, the idea is that better versions will result from better programmers getting their hands on the code.. so, get to work dammit.

  42. If you're gonna make some heavy mods to this source and release it, please give new versions a unique name starting with "MC" & Version # as in:

  44. "MC AssKicker 1.0" or "MC McKracque1.0" or whatever...

  46. That way versions will be easier to keep track of.  Feel free to use parts of this program, I already know someone who is using the fcrypt.c routine for a completely different project...
